What we see

Conditions we treat in Woodside, NY

Musculoskeletal problems: the spine, the joints, the muscles, and the nerves irritated by them. Below is everything we treat and, just as importantly, the list of things we do not.

Some back and neck pain needs a doctor today, not a chiropractor. Some back and neck pain is not a case for a chiropractor and needs a doctor the same day. Go to an emergency room, not to us, if you have numbness in the groin or inner thighs, if you have lost control of your bladder or bowels, if a leg is becoming weak rather than just painful, if the pain followed a serious fall or a car crash, if you have a fever with back pain, if you have unexplained weight loss alongside it, if you have a history of cancer, or if a headache came on suddenly and is the worst you have ever had. We would rather you rang your doctor and never rang us at all.

Almost everything that walks through this door is one of about a dozen things, and the first hour is largely about working out which. That sounds reductive and it is actually reassuring: the common problems are common, they are mostly mechanical, and the great majority of them improve.

What matters is that the uncommon ones get recognised rather than treated. A small proportion of back pain is not mechanical at all, and the entire purpose of asking somebody about their weight, their sleep, their medication and their medical history before touching them is to find those cases early. Being referred on is a normal outcome here rather than a sign anything went wrong.

01

Spine & Nerve Pain

The reason most people call: a back that has locked up, a neck that will not turn, a pain running down a leg, a headache that starts at the base of the skull. These pages describe what we actually do about each of them and how quickly you should expect to know whether it is working.

  • Chiropractic Adjustment

The technique the whole trade is named after: a short, shallow, quick movement through a stiff joint. It takes a fraction of a second, it is usually a relief rather than a pain, and it is not the only thing we do. Read the Chiropractic Adjustment page

  • Lower Back Pain

The single most common reason anybody rings this clinic. Most of it is a joint and the muscle around it, most of it improves inside a few weeks, and most of it does not need a scan. Read the Lower Back Pain page

  • Neck Pain

A neck that will not turn, a shoulder that aches with it, and a headache creeping up the back of the skull. Treatable — and treatable without high-velocity manipulation if that is what you would prefer. Read the Neck Pain page

  • Sciatica & Leg Pain

Pain, pins and needles or numbness running from the back into the leg. Usually an irritated nerve root, usually settling over weeks to months, and occasionally a reason to be examined urgently. Read the Sciatica & Leg Pain page

  • Disc Injury Care

Discs do not slip and they cannot be put back by hand. What conservative care can genuinely do for a bulging or herniated disc, how long it takes, and when a surgeon is the right answer. Read the Disc Injury Care page

  • Headache Care

Headaches that come from the neck respond well to neck treatment. Migraine is a neurological condition and belongs with your doctor. Telling the two apart is most of the first appointment. Read the Headache Care page

Injury Recovery

Something happened — a match, a crash, a lift at work, a fall on the ice. Injury care is a different job from everyday back pain: there is a timeline, there is usually paperwork, and there is a point at which the honest answer is imaging or a surgeon rather than another visit here.

  • Sports Injury Care

Injuries come with a deadline attached. We work backwards from the date you need to run, lift or play again, and tell you plainly when that date is not realistic. Read the Sports Injury Care page

  • Auto Accident Care

Care after a collision, documented properly from the first visit. In New York, no-fault insurance usually covers this rather than your health plan — and some of its deadlines are short. Read the Auto Accident Care page

  • Whiplash Care

The neck injury that is usually worse on day two than on the day itself. Early gentle movement beats a collar, and understanding what is happening genuinely speeds up recovery. Read the Whiplash Care page

  • Work Injury Care

Backs hurt at work more than anywhere else. Treatment, a realistic plan for getting back on the job, and the workers' compensation paperwork handled properly from the first visit. Read the Work Injury Care page

  • Shoulder Pain

Shoulders that hurt overhead, hurt at night and will not settle on rest. Most respond to loading rather than avoiding — and some come from the neck rather than the shoulder at all. Read the Shoulder Pain page

  • Hip & Knee Pain

Hips and knees that ache on stairs, after sitting, or a mile into a run. Usually a loading problem, usually improvable, and occasionally arthritis that is far more treatable than people expect. Read the Hip & Knee Pain page

Hands-On Therapies

The work that happens alongside the adjustment, or instead of it. Soft tissue, massage, traction, taping, orthotics and the exercise you do at home. Most people who get better get better because of what happens between the visits, not during them.

  • Soft Tissue Therapy

Hands, thumbs and elbows applied to muscle and the tissue around it. For a lot of stiff necks and locked-up backs this is where most of the relief actually comes from. Read the Soft Tissue Therapy page

  • Therapeutic Massage

An hour in a quiet room with the lights down. Genuinely useful for muscular pain, sleep and stress, and honestly described rather than sold as something it is not. Read the Therapeutic Massage page

  • Spinal Decompression

A motorised table that applies slow lengthening through the spine. It suits some disc-related problems well and does very little for others — and we will tell you which we think you are. Read the Spinal Decompression page

  • Rehab Exercise

The least glamorous thing we do and the one that carries the most weight. Two or three specific things, written down, ten minutes a day, reviewed and progressed. Read the Rehab Exercise page

  • Custom Orthotics

Moulded insoles, made from an impression of your feet. Genuinely useful for a specific set of problems, considerably oversold for everything else, and not the first thing we reach for. Read the Custom Orthotics page

Everyday & Life Stage

Care shaped around the body in front of us. A pregnant patient, a child, an eighty-year-old with thin bones and a desk worker with a neck full of Tuesday all need different hands, different force and different advice.

  • Posture Correction

There is no single correct posture, and plenty of people with textbook posture are in pain. What actually helps is capacity, variety and how long you hold any one position. Read the Posture Correction page

  • Prenatal Chiropractic

Side-lying, bolstered and low force, for the back, pelvis and hips that pregnancy makes ache. Nothing we do involves a twist through the abdomen, and we make no claims about the birth. Read the Prenatal Chiropractic page

  • Pediatric Chiropractic

Children get back and neck pain from sport, bags and falls, and that is worth looking at. We do not treat colic, reflux, ear infections, sleeping or behaviour, and we say so before you book. Read the Pediatric Chiropractic page

  • Care After Sixty

Thinner bone, stiffer joints and longer medication lists mean different hands. Dr. Halloran almost never twists anybody, and half of what he prescribes is about walking and balance. Read the Care After Sixty page

  • Desk & Workstation Care

Nine hours at a laptop is a mechanical problem with a mechanical answer. Treatment buys a window; the screen height, the break timer and two exercises are what keep it. Read the Desk & Workstation Care page

The other list

What we do not treat

This list matters more than the one above it. These are conditions chiropractic is frequently claimed to help with, and they are conditions we will not treat you for — because the claim is not supported and because time spent here is time not spent with somebody who can actually help.

  • Asthma and other lung disease
  • Allergies and hay fever
  • Ear infections
  • Infant colic and reflux
  • Digestive and bowel disease
  • High blood pressure and heart disease
  • Infertility
  • Immune function and “boosting immunity”
  • Diabetes and thyroid disease
  • ADHD, autism and developmental conditions
  • Cancer of any kind
  • Infection of any kind

What chiropractic does not treat. We treat musculoskeletal problems: the spine, the joints, the muscles and the nerves that are irritated by them. We do not claim that adjusting a spine treats asthma, allergies, ear infections, colic, digestive disease, high blood pressure, infertility, immune function or any other internal illness. Chiropractors who make those claims are making them without good evidence, and you should be wary of anybody who does. If somebody has told you that spinal care will fix a condition on that list, we will tell you honestly that it will not.

A fee agreed before the visit, not after it

Book an appointment

Pick a chiropractor and an hour from the calendar — it shows only the times each of them genuinely has free. A first visit is a full hour and costs $95 for the examination on its own, or $145 if we treat you at the same appointment. You decide which after the examination, not before.
