Chiropractor in Woodside, NY

Four chiropractors on 61st Street treating backs, necks and joints — a full hour for a first visit, the fee agreed before it, and a review date set in advance so somebody has to ask out loud whether this is actually working. We do not sell packages.

  • A full hour, first visit

Some back and neck pain needs a doctor today, not a chiropractor. Some back and neck pain is not a case for a chiropractor and needs a doctor the same day. Go to an emergency room, not to us, if you have numbness in the groin or inner thighs, if you have lost control of your bladder or bowels, if a leg is becoming weak rather than just painful, if the pain followed a serious fall or a car crash, if you have a fever with back pain, if you have unexplained weight loss alongside it, if you have a history of cancer, or if a headache came on suddenly and is the worst you have ever had. We would rather you rang your doctor and never rang us at all.

Why people call us

Six reasons somebody walks through this door

Different problems, different plans. The first appointment is largely about working out which of these is in front of us — and occasionally about telling somebody it is none of them.

It locked up this morning

You bent to pick something off the floor and could not straighten. This is the single most common reason anybody calls us, it is usually a joint and the muscle around it rather than anything sinister, and it is usually far better inside two weeks. We keep same-day slots for it.

It has been there for months

Long-running back or neck pain is a different problem from a sudden lock-up and needs a different plan: less hands, more loading, and an honest conversation about sleep, work and what you have stopped doing because it hurts. It moves slower and it moves.

Something is running down my leg

Pain, pins and needles or numbness travelling below the knee usually means a nerve is irritated. It needs examining properly rather than treating blind, because the answer occasionally is imaging or a surgical opinion rather than a course of care here.

I did it playing something

Sports injuries come with a deadline attached, and the useful question is not only what hurts but when you next need to run on it. We work backwards from that and tell you plainly if the date is unrealistic.

I was in a crash

Whiplash care has its own timeline and its own paperwork, and a proper record from the beginning matters more than most people realise. We document what we find from the first visit onward.

I sit down for a living

Nine hours at a laptop is a mechanical problem with a mechanical answer. The adjustment gives you a window; the desk setup and two exercises are what keep it.

What we treat

The problems we see most

Twenty-two service pages, each one saying what is actually done, what it costs, roughly how long it should take, and when the honest answer is somebody other than us.

How this clinic works

Four things we do differently, and can be held to

Chiropractic has a reputation problem, and most of it is earned by the parts of the trade that sell thirty-visit plans at the first appointment. Here is what we do instead.

The consulting corner at Woodside Chiropractor, Woodside NY

A full hour for a first visit

Sixty minutes: history, examination, what we think is going on, what we propose, and what it costs. If that conversation ends with us sending you to your doctor instead, the visit still cost what we quoted.

No packages, no contracts

You pay per visit. We do not sell blocks of thirty, we do not ask for a signature on a care plan, and nobody here earns a bonus for rebooking you. If you feel better and want to stop, stop.

The risks, in writing

We tell you what adjustment can do, what it cannot, what the side effects usually are and what the rare serious ones are. If you would rather we did not manipulate your neck, say so and we will not.

One chiropractor, start to finish

You see the same person each visit, in their own room, on their own schedule. Four chiropractors work here and each keeps their own book, so you can pick the one whose approach suits you and stay with them.

What chiropractic does not treat. We treat musculoskeletal problems: the spine, the joints, the muscles and the nerves that are irritated by them. We do not claim that adjusting a spine treats asthma, allergies, ear infections, colic, digestive disease, high blood pressure, infertility, immune function or any other internal illness. Chiropractors who make those claims are making them without good evidence, and you should be wary of anybody who does. If somebody has told you that spinal care will fix a condition on that list, we will tell you honestly that it will not.

Our chiropractors

Four chiropractors, four rooms, four separate books

Each keeps their own schedule and sees their own patients, so you can pick the one whose approach suits you and stay with them. You see the same person every visit.

Dr. Adrian Castellano, Spine & Disc Care at Woodside Chiropractor

Dr. Adrian Castellano, DC

Spine & Disc Care

Clinical Director · Room 1 · here since 2009

Adrian opened this clinic in 2009 after nine years working in a physical therapy practice on Northern Boulevard, and he still takes the cases nobody else wants to take: the long-running low back, the leg pain that has already been to three people, the patient who has been told they need surgery and wants to know whether that is true. He is the person here most likely to tell you that chiropractic is not your answer, and he says it early rather than after eight visits.

Dr. Priya Raghunathan, Sports Injury & Rehabilitation at Woodside Chiropractor

Dr. Priya Raghunathan, DC

Sports Injury & Rehabilitation

Chiropractor · Room 2 · here since 2016

Priya looks after the runners, the football players from the fields at Sunnyside Gardens, the weekend cyclists and the people who took up the gym in January and hurt themselves in February. She ran the 800 metres competitively into her twenties, which is why she is unusually blunt about training loads and unusually good at telling somebody they are not ready to race yet.

Dr. Marisol Bautista, Prenatal & Family Care at Woodside Chiropractor

Dr. Marisol Bautista, DC

Prenatal & Family Care

Chiropractor · Room 3 · here since 2014

Marisol sees the pregnant patients, the new parents carrying a baby on one hip for eight months, and the children whose parents want somebody sensible to look at them. She is careful about what she claims: she treats the aching pelvis and the mid-back, she does not treat colic, reflux or ear infections, and she says so at the first appointment before anybody has to ask.

Dr. Sean Halloran, Older Adults & Gentle Technique at Woodside Chiropractor

Dr. Sean Halloran, DC

Older Adults & Gentle Technique

Chiropractor · Room 4 · here since 2011

Sean has spent fifteen years working almost entirely with patients over sixty, which in practice means working with thinner bone, stiffer joints, longer medication lists and a great deal more caution. He is the person to ask for if you have been told you are too old or too fragile to see a chiropractor, and also the person most likely to agree with whoever told you that, if he thinks they were right.

Booking

The calendar shows only the hours that are genuinely free

Pick a chiropractor, pick an hour, and it is booked. The calendar reads the same schedule each of them keeps — their working days, their lunch break, the hours they have blocked and the appointments already taken — so an hour on screen is an hour you can actually have.

You get an email straight away with a link to confirm it, and a reminder the day before if you booked further ahead than that. Not confirming does not cancel anything; it simply shows as unconfirmed on the chiropractor's calendar until you say either way. You can cancel your own appointment from that email at any time up until it starts.

Fees

What it costs, before you book rather than after

These are the fees, not estimates. A first visit is $95 for the consultation and examination on their own, or $145 if we treat you at the same appointment — and you decide which of those it is after the examination, not before. Follow-up visits are $65. There are no packages to buy, no plans to sign and no discount for committing to a block of visits, because a discount for committing is a reason to keep coming that has nothing to do with your back. We take card, cash and most major insurance, and the insurance page sets out how the billing actually works.

In their words

What patients say

These comments are invented, like everything else on this demonstration site. They are not marked up as reviews and no rating is claimed anywhere — see the note at the foot of the page.

“He told me at the first appointment that he thought I needed an MRI before he touched me, and wrote to my doctor that afternoon. I did need one. I came back afterwards and he treated me for six weeks.”

Patient, Sunnyside · low back and leg pain

“I asked whether she could crack my neck and she asked me why I wanted her to. Nobody had ever asked me that before. We did it a different way and it was fine.”

Patient, Woodside · neck pain and headaches

“The part I did not expect was being told to stop coming. Four visits, then a phone call three weeks later to check I was still all right. No package, no thirty-visit plan.”

Patient, Jackson Heights · mid-back pain

“I was thirty-one weeks pregnant and terrified of being twisted. She never twisted anything. I lay on my side propped up with cushions and it was the first hour in a month that my hip did not ache.”

Patient, Elmhurst · pregnancy-related pelvic pain

“I am seventy-eight and two people had already told me I was too brittle for this. He agreed about the twisting and did something else entirely with a little clicking instrument.”

Patient, Maspeth · osteoarthritis and stiffness

“I wanted to run a half marathon in nine weeks. She said six was a fantasy and nine was possible if I did exactly what she wrote down. I ran it.”

Patient, Astoria · runner's knee and hip

The clinic

Three minutes' walk from the 61st Street–Woodside station — the 7 train, the Long Island Rail Road, and the Q32, Q60, Q66 and Q70 buses all stop within a block. There is metered parking on 61st Street and a short loading bay outside the door. The entrance is step-free, the treatment rooms are on one level, and there is a bench by the door if you need a minute before you come in.

3,100 square feet on one floor with four private adjusting rooms, a separate soft-tissue room, a rehabilitation floor with mats, bands and rollers, a traction table room, and a quiet recovery nook with a chair and a glass of water for anyone who wants five minutes before they go back out into the day.

Questions

The questions we are asked most

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in New York?

No. Chiropractors are primary-contact practitioners, so you can book directly and most people do. Your insurance may be a different matter — some plans want a referral before they will pay even though the law does not require one — so it is worth one phone call to your insurer before your first visit. We will see you either way.

Does an adjustment hurt?

Usually not. There is a quick pressure and often an audible pop, which is gas moving in the joint fluid and not bones grinding or anything being put back in. Most people find it a relief rather than painful. Being a little sore afterwards is common and normal for a day or two, the way you are sore after unfamiliar exercise. Sharp or increasing pain afterwards is not normal, and you should ring us if you get it.

Is that popping sound my spine going back into place?

No, and anyone who tells you it is is telling you a story. The sound is a bubble of gas forming in the fluid inside the joint when the surfaces are separated quickly. It is not a bone moving back, it is not a vertebra going in, and how loud it is tells you nothing at all about how well the treatment worked. Some very effective techniques make no sound whatsoever.

Once I start, do I have to keep going forever?

No, and if a clinic tells you otherwise you should leave it. Most problems we see are done in four to eight visits. Some people choose to come back occasionally when something flares, which is a reasonable thing to want and a completely different thing from an open-ended plan sold to you at the first appointment. We do not sell packages and we agree a review date in advance.

Can chiropractic help my asthma, my allergies or my child's ear infections?

No. We do not claim it can, and we will not treat you or your child for any of those things. Chiropractic works on the musculoskeletal system — spine, joints, muscles and the nerves irritated by them. Claims that adjusting a spine treats asthma, allergies, ear infections, colic, digestion, blood pressure, infertility or immunity are made without good evidence. Please see your doctor for all of those.

Is it safe to have my neck adjusted?

Neck manipulation is generally safe and serious complications are rare, but rare is not never, and you are entitled to a straight answer rather than a reassuring one. We screen for the circumstances that make it unwise, we will tell you if we think your neck should be left alone, and we can treat a neck perfectly well without high-velocity manipulation. If you would prefer we did not, say so — you will not have to argue about it. The risks and safety page sets all of this out at length.

Do you take x-rays?

Not here, and most people do not need them. Imaging is useful when the history or the examination points at something specific — a suspected fracture, a red flag, a nerve problem that is not settling — and it is close to useless as a routine screen, because plenty of people with perfectly comfortable backs have alarming-looking scans. When you do need imaging we refer you for it and read the report with you.

What if you cannot help me?

Then we say so and point you at whoever can, and we would rather do that at visit two than visit twelve. That might be your family doctor, an orthopaedic surgeon, a neurologist, a rheumatologist, a physical therapist or a pain clinic. We write to them, we send what we found, and we do not charge you for the referral.

A fee agreed before the visit, not after it

Book an appointment

Pick a chiropractor and an hour from the calendar — it shows only the times each of them genuinely has free. A first visit is a full hour and costs $95 for the examination on its own, or $145 if we treat you at the same appointment. You decide which after the examination, not before.
